Our client, an executive at Bloomberg was on her way to work when she was struck by a car, driven by an attorney, that was making a left turn onto 3rd Avenue from 96th Street in Manhattan.
As a result of the crash our client sustained severe injuries to her jaw and face resulting in a debilitating and painful temporo-mandibular joint dysfunction, known as TMJ.
Your temporo-mandibular joint is a hinge that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull, which are in front of each ear. It lets you move your jaw up and down and side to side, so you can talk, chew, and yawn.
Common symptoms of TMJ include pain or tenderness in your face, jaw joint area, neck and shoulders, and in or around the ear when you chew, speak, or open your mouth wide.
Someone with TMJ also experiences clicking, popping, or grating sounds in the jaw joint when you open or close your mouth or chew which leads to trouble chewing or a sudden uncomfortable bite — as if the upper and lower teeth are not fitting together properly.
To help relieve the pain associated with TMJ disorders one can try pain relievers and anti-inflammatories and your doctor may suggest an oral splint or mouth guard, physical therapy treatments including ultrasound, moist heat and ice and exercises to stretch and strengthen jaw muscles. When other methods don’t help, your doctor might suggest procedures such as an arthro-centesis, corticosteroid injections into the joint or TMJ arthroscopy. In some cases, arthroscopic surgery can be as effective for treating various types of TMJ disorders as open-joint surgery.
After five years of litigation, at the eve of trial, after jury selection, Justin Blitz, Esq. settled our client’s case for $212,500.00.
